Centre for the Promotion of Health Contact: Ira R. Allen, Director of Public Relations 202.387.2829 presscfah obesity and depression can work together to cause chronic low-level inflammation associated with atherosclerosis and increased risk of heart disease, according to a report in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity. Among a large group of German men 45-74, obese men had significantly higher concentrations of a protein called CRP compared with obese men. PCR serves as a sign of inflammation of the arteries and high levels of protein may be a good predictor of future heart disease. And the depression seems to add to obesity problems hearts of men, CRP levels were higher in obese men, the more depressed than among obese men are less depressed, according to Karl-Heinz
Ladwig, Ph.D., GSF National Research Center and Environmental Health, and colleagues. The depression did not affect CRP levels among obese men, however, suggest that the combination of obesity and depression may be more risky for certain men. We can not give a convincing explanation of why the association between CRP and depression was significantly higher in obese than non-obese participants. However, it is possible that both obesity and depression, common soil, therefore, makes depressed, overweight people are particularly vulnerable to coronary heart disease, said Ladwig. The association between obesity and depression remained strong even after considering other factors that may affect levels of CRP, including the use of tobacco, alcohol and physical activity, theresearchers said. Twenty percent of the 3,205 men included in the study were identified as obese. In general, the group of obese men was not more depressed than non-obese group, Ladwig said.
