Aerobic exercise is often prescribed to help prevent or control type 2 diabetes. As people age, which generally have a decreased sensitivity to insulin, a key underlying factor that makes them more likely to get diabetes, said K. Sreekumaran Nair, MD, Mayo Clinic endocrinologist and studys principal investigator. The study found that
middle-aged and older people do not support the increase in insulin sensitivity that aerobic exercise produces, says Dr. Nair. Young people, on the other hand, were found to maintain higher insulin sensitivity even four days after their last training session.Previous studies by other researchers have shown to improve insulin sensitivity in the elderly if they are measured in a day of aerobic exercise, says Dr. Nair. Our study aimed to determine whether people of all ages to maintain the positive effects of regular aerobic exercise program for a long period. With decreased sensitivity to insulin, blood glucose levels rise. High levels of blood glucose typical of diabetes can damage almost every organ in the body. Increased insulin sensitivity helps regulate blood sugar and
prevent or reduce the potentially harmful effects. The study also examined whether the reduction of abdominal fat or changes in the bodys ability to convert food into energy resulting from aerobic exercise may be related to changes in insulin sensitivity in people who exercise regularly . For the study, 65 healthy but sedentary majority of men and women aged 21 to 87, participating in a program of aerobic exercise
